ChatGPT's Voice Chat Feature Is Rolling Out To Android and iOS 9

OpenAI's "ChatGPT with voice" feature announced in September is now rolling out to all free users on mobile. Engadget reports: When the company first introduced voice chats, it admitted that the capability to create "realistic synthetic voices from just a few seconds of real speech" presents new risks. It could, for instance, allow bad actors to impersonate public figures or anybody they want. As a result, it decided that ChatGPT's voice feature will focus on conversations. It's powered by a text-to-speech model that can generate "human-like audio from just text and a few seconds of sample speech." OpenAI worked with voice actors to create the capability and offers five different voices to choose from.

I am just hoping we get less FA about chatGPT and openAI CEO, wake me up when something is really happening. Going back to sleep now.

  • I don't want my phone to talk to me. I don't want to talk to my phone. Hell, I don't even want to talk on my phone.
I really don't need a pretend AI on my phone.

I wonder how long until this AI fad crashes.

It should be around the same life cycle as crypto. I am sure Nvidia hopes the next fad will put them at an advantage as well... /s

That is about what I figured. I wonder what the next tech fad will be. Maybe web 3.0. It is about time for another loop back to web crap.

... and either it sucks or my Texas accent sucks because when I type a prompt, it understands. If it doesn't quite get it, I can clarify on the run with more text prompts. With my voice, I have to spend too much time with too much frustration. I'm looking for answers, not a new hobby.

Nice long, informative answer providing detailed math, and the answer, "Percentage of c 0.01597%."

    Maybe it'll get better.

  • It's really interesting that these "AI" programs are doing new things, things we haven't seen before.
The text they generate often seems human, though lacking in real-world knowledge and off-kilter in strange ways, like the writing of a bright child or eccentric.
The images they generate don't seem like real photos, but certainly interesting art.
The voices they generate don't seem like real human voices, but often closer than the synthesized speech we're used to.
The real risk of that last one is that current

  • I'm surprised ChatGPT on Android doesn't use an audio trigger like "Alexa" or "Hey Google" to start listening. It also fails to detect no audio for, say, a second and assume that's the end of the audio input and it should start processing it. And, yep, when it does finally process it, it just fills in the text input box and doesn't submit it as a question!

So here's the horribly clunky flow:

    1. Fire up the ChatGPT app and touch the waveform icon (nope, not a microphone icon and it's got no audio trigger phras
