Apple Unveils iPhone 16 Pro Featuring Bigger Screen, New Chip And Pro Recording Options (theverge.com) 37

Apple announced the iPhone 16 Pro lineup at Monday's product event. The company's new flagship smartphones have slightly bigger screens across both models: 6.3 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro Max (up from 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively, on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max). The Verge: The bodies of the phones are once again made from titanium. It comes in four colors: black, white, natural, and a new "desert titanium." Apple also claims that the iPhone 16 Pro Max has "the best iPhone battery life ever." The iPhone 16 Pro lineup comes with the A18 Pro chip, with a 16-core Neural Engine that it says will offer "amazing performance" for Apple Intelligence features, including 15 percent faster performance than the iPhone 15 Pro. It also has improved graphics performance thanks to a 6-core GPU that's 20 percent faster than the iPhone 15 Pro's A17 Pro.

The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999, whereas the iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at $1,199.

Maybe get a tablet or something? I already find my iphone 6S a little too big and I don't know what I am going to do when comes the time to replace it.

I have an iPhone 13 mini and my next phone will probably be one running Android. I'm thinking I'm just going to have to get over my distrust of Google, because if I have to use a phone with a gargantuan screen anyway, might as well skip the Apple tax.

    • So I wonder if this is going to be the return of the "phablet" that was fairly popular roughly 10 years ago. :-/
      • They still exist, they have just been rolled into other products. For example the Galaxy Note series was stopped, and instead the Galaxy S added to the lineup an "Ultra" model with a larger screen and a stylus. The current Galaxy S23 Ultra is physically larger than the Galaxy Note 5 "phablet" of 10 years ago.

    • It's surprising there are no good Android smaller phones either. I guess the market has spoken. But my wife for example specifically bought an older Pixel phone because she wanted a smaller one.

The 16/16 Pro is basically the same size as previous generations. Just the screen has made it even closer to the edge.

Things have gotten a bit longer compared to the 6S, though.

This generation has been disappointing. The Pixel 9 was the same as the Pixel 8 in most regards, just with "AI" that nobody wants.

      • A lot of phones these days are shaped like bananas. I returned a Galaxy because it was way too long and skinny. My Pixel 7 is fine - not huge, yet big enough to see comfortably.

I'm gonna ride the SE train as long as I can. I suspect that the next SE will be a FaceID phone which sucks but it is what it is. Hopefully I'll be able to stick with a touchid phone for at least 2 or 3 more years. My main concern is the size of the phones. The SE is already at the max that I can comfortably deal with with one hand (which is how I deal with my phone most of the time).

      Ah well. Time marches on.

Get a mini! Oh wait. Apple doesn't make those anymore. :( SE, but that's older hardware. Damn it from a 12 mini user.

      • Apple didn't bring any new features this time. Also, the SE doesn't have any of the new features. This about sums it up, no? /s
  • Bigger screens, population growth, economy always expanding, eventually something has to give; well, unless pants start including bigger pockets or people just get bigger buts (sorry didn't mean to trigger the fetishists).

Apple could always cross-promote their new phones with a triple bacon cheeseburger from Wendy's.

Vegan Triple iBurger Max Pro. Know your demo.

    • People would happily buy the smaller ones if they didn't nerf the cameras and other features. Ideally the only difference should just be screen size and extra battery to compensate.

    • It is essentially 2-3 pixels taller and wider. Courage!

I really should upgrade my 12 Pro, but it isn't exactly compelling. If they aren't going to provide meaningful additional improvements then the prices need to drop.

    * Button for camera

Not exactly a landmark year for the iPhone. Maybe they'll have something to pique my interest in 2025.

      What exactly does it do?

On Android you can double tap the power button to open the camera, and use the volume keys to take a photo. All configurable, of course.

Nothing makes a person more productive than the last minute.
