AI voice clones are already being deployed in podcasts and video games, but how long until they can be harnessed directly by the general public? From a report: Probably sooner than you think, with Samsung today announcing a feature for its Bixby mobile assistant that lets users clone their voice to answer phone calls. The idea is that if someone calls you but you can't answer aloud you can type out a response and it'll be read in a simulacrum of your voice. Some caveats here: this feature is only currently available in Korean as the Bixby Custom Voice Creator app for a small number of Samsung handsets (the new Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra), which means we've been unable to test it ourselves. The voice quality might be abysmal and response time too slow to be useful. But cloning voices to answer calls is well within the scope of current technology, with AI tools able to create realistic copies of voices from just a few minutes of audio.

The idea is that if someone calls you but you can't answer aloud you can type out a response and it'll be read in a simulacrum of your voice.
So, situations where your phone rings, you have your hands free but for some reason can't answer the phone to say "Hey, can I call you right back?"
It's a feature for people who can't put their phone down while they're having sex, obviously.

I see it at least as theoretically useful for when im driving and get a text message. I'd at least be theoretically open to having that read to me in the senders voice.
I mean... i can see that as a reasonably usecase, im not sure its actually desirable. If someone is relaying a message to me from someone else, then i don't expect it to be in the original voice, and don't see any real value to it.

My phone has something called "voice mail". It invites the caller to leave a message, and if it is interesting enough, maybe I'll respond to it.

Letting a call go to voicemail leaves the caller wondering when/if you'll return their call. The idea here is to let them know you did acknowledge their call but can't speak at the moment. I thought most phones have a "respond with a preset text message" feature these days, so this seems like a bit of a gimmick.

Besides which, most of the time, the caller can just leave a message with whatever it is they wanted to say.
You know who I don't call back? Someone who leaves a message that just says "call me back" with no indication of why the fuck they called me.

Wasn't there a guy named Edison who'd invented a device that could record, among other things, your voice and then play it back? I don't see how this is in any way novel or even necessary.
And the outgoing message feature of voicemail, and answering machines before that, built on Edison's ideas. So Samsung is doing nothing new here.

Forget the TOS. Any malware that grabs access to you phone can share your voice with whoever it pleases. Samsung would do vile things, but avoid actually criminal things.
