iPhone 15 USB-C Rumor Calls Out High-Speed Data Transfers As a Pro-Only Feature (theverge.com) 139

The iPhone 15 Pro models are in line for a massive upgrade to their wired transfer speeds with the switch to USB-C, according to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Unfortunately, he doesn't believe that benefit is coming to the regular 2023 iPhones. The Verge reports: He predicts that the 15 and 15 Plus will also swap in USB-C ports but, just like the 2022 10th-gen iPad, they'll be stuck with the same USB 2.0 speeds they had with Lighting. Kuo made the prediction in a series of tweets on Wednesday and says the information is from his "latest survey." (The analyst is known for getting information from supply chain sources.) He specified by predicting that the "15 Pro & 15 Pro Max will support at least USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3." If that's true, that'd mean they could transfer data at speeds up to 40 Gbps -- a boon for people who actually use the Pro phones to shoot a lot of ProRes video and raw photos, where even fast WiFi and cloud uploads aren't really a good substitute.

Every apple fan everywhere says lightning is better, so there's no way this can be true. This was forced on apple, after all, because anything apple didn't invent is always inferior.

Lightning is better for the features that count. By your logic, using PCIe x16 would be better than USB-C because it's faster. People use the cable to charge, they don't bulk transfer massive amounts of data.

Like its non-existent HDMI support ?

USB-C is better for power delivery in every single metric, due to USB-PD (which lightning cannot do), and its 24 conductors.
Further than that, you couldn't be more wrong that people don't bulk transfer massive amounts of data.

Photo, Music, and Backups are real transfers that really happen. Just because you don't use them doesn't mean they're not used.
They're used enough that every major linux distribution bothers to include the software to do the transfers.

    • I hope models sold in the EU have the slowest speed possible.

I actually kind of like the lightning connector itself better from a durability point of view. I'm not really biased either way, but I we have a lot of devices in our office and the USB cords seem to wear out much faster. Also, usb mini and usb-c end up clogged up with pocket lint in the device which is hard to clean out without damaging the port, seems to be much less of an issue with lightning.

    • That'll work well where there's no 5G or perhaps no signal at all or the other device isn't even cell enabled.

      Other than that , brilliant.

  • Apple is in a habit now of having the latest, fastest SoC only in the Pro models, and last year's Pro chip in the standard models.

This means that the "iPhone 15" is probably going to get the A16 Bionic SoC from the iPhone 14 Pro.
The iPhone 14 Pro has a Lightning connector, and Lightning supports max USB 2.0. Thus the A16 probably only supports USB 2.0 speeds.

  • Seriously, what is the advantage of an iPhone these days other than to empty your wallet of huge amounts of cash? They have no technical advantages over Android now like they used to back in the day so unless you must have Apple because err, Apple why would you buy one?

    • Security and OS updates for years. 6-7 year old iPhones run the latest OS. You’ll be lucky to get 3 years with a $1000 flagship model from Samsung or a Pixel. We all know google never cancels anything without warning. I started with Android and switched to an iPhone because everything just worked better. I don’t have to have all my friends agree on a third party messaging app because iMessage works, and works over wifi too.

Sure, as long as all your friends have iPhones.

        Oh god.
There are exactly 2 people who would say that.
        1) People who have never done it.
        2) People who are full of shit, either intentionally, or due to delusion.

My iPhone 6s was completely unusable after 3 years of updates.
Had to move up to an X.
The X feels like its approaching that point, now. Trying to start iMessage takes about 10 seconds.

This is incorrect: Google has committed to at least five years of support, now that they're using their own SoC and aren't limited by Qualcomm's support.

AFAICT Google has never canceled anything without warning. They always provide ample warning and a way to migrate. In any case, "cancellation" isn't really an issue here; Google has publicly committed to support terms for Pixel devices, and is obligated to fulfill them.

      • Samsung officially committed to 4 years of major upgrades plus one year of security updates, counting from market introduction, not only for the S series (flagships, whereas the cheapest is the S22 at around USD 600 where I live) but also for mid range devices, A53 and A33. That last one can be had at way below USD 300. My reason to come back to Samsung after going for devices that get community support with LineageOS and the like. My almost 6 years old OnePlus 3T was losing support for LineageOS due to the

My wife made me switch to an iPhone for sharing notes and photos easier. So we rewarded Apple for their bad behavior. I assumed I'd find a dozen little things better on Android and a dozen little things better on Apple. After 9 months, I found dozens of tiny things Android did better (like more streamlined WiFi or Bluetooth dialogs..things that are VERY tiny), but haven't yet found anything I think Apple does better. I generally like Google's ecosystem better (Maps/Photos), but can't give an indisputabl

So it will appeal to SuperKendall "Photo pros". • Among the biggest grievances I have with the iPhone as it currently exists is that FaceID only works when you are holding the phone and looking squarely at it, which means it is not possible to use almost "hands-free", on a device that is sitting on a counter or desk unless you are directly looking down at it from above. Touch ID simply required you to put a single finger on the sensor, not requiring you to pick it up or aim it at your face in any way, and it would unlock, allowing one to leave it restin
