Brother of Drug Lord Pablo Escobar Launches 'Unbreakable' Foldable Smartphone (neowin.net) 107

Roberto Escobar, brother of the late drug lord Pablo Escobar, has announced a foldable smartphone that is "very difficult to break" thanks to the screen's "special type of plastic." The Escobar Fold 1, as it is called, significantly undercuts Samsung's Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X with a price of only $349. Neowin reports: While all the foldable phones announced so far have a price tag of at least $1,500+, the Escobar Fold 1 will be available from only $349 which includes free shipping and a case as well. It will be sold unlocked and work on all compatible networks worldwide. This makes it cheaper than other non-foldable flagship smartphones available in the market right now.

The drug lord's brother has been able to price the phone so low by cutting out the middlemen like networks and retailers. He is also preparing to file a $30 billion class-action lawsuit against Apple for scamming people and wants the company to "give some of their illegal profits back to the people." Like the Huawei Mate X, the Escobar Fold can be unfolded to turn it into a tablet with a screen size of 7.8-inches. The expanded AMOLED display has a 4:3 aspect ratio and an FHD+ resolution. The design language is different from the Samsung Galaxy Fold which features two separate displays, one of which folds.

It's vaporware. Even without the folding screen, it would be impossible to build a phone with those specs for that price.

Sure, unless you're sitting on literally Billions of dollars of cash that needs laundering through some sort of business venture. If all the components and manufacturing for the phones are paid for with "dirty money" it starts to clear that stockpile of cash that can't easily be spent (except with hungry Chinese tech corps that probably don't have to worry about demonstrating the money they took in was clean). Now all the money coming in from the sales is "clean" and ready for spending. Sure, the venture might cost half or more of the fortune you're sitting on (let's say it takes $700 to manufacture the phone that you're selling for $350) but having $10 billion you can spend is better than having $20 billion you can't.

  • Nothing about this news is about drugs, why does it need to be mentioned three whole freaking times? One time even prominently in the title. Imagine you invent something great and new only to be introduced as "Roberto Escobar, brother of the late drug lord".
  • Whatever he does he will always be the 'brother of drug lord Pablo Escobar'

At this point the only way he's going to shake it off is if he goes into drugs himself.

Directly or indirectly, all his work was funded and armed by the USA.

        • All indirectly. And thus the 'USA' is irrelevant.

          • The USA could wipe out the drugs trade overnight - by legalizing/decriminalizing it.

Alcohol prohibition didn't work, drugs prohibition isn't working for exactly the same reasons.

Did legalizing alcohol turn everybody into a raging alcoholic? Neither will legalizing drugs. The sort of people who want to take drugs are already taking them.

          • Directly: The biggest market for South American drugs is the USA. It's US citizens' money that's going South.

Indirectly: The USA is keeping drugs illegal thus ensuring huge profits for anybody who can get them across the border. They're also selling them the weapons and machinery needed to keep the trade going.

The Kennedy's history comes to my mind. (AC due to modding) During 1930's prohibition times in the U.S. Joe Kennedy built his fortune by illegaly running alcohol, which is absolutely nowadays considered a 'drug'. History repeats itself. Nothing different from today's drug cartels using $ to go into legitamate businesses. Same old historical story, just now with modern people. (And the beat goes on...)
        • Back in the Noriega days, I sometimes asserted that Noriega was just a modern day Joe Kennedy.

Off topic, but while we are on the topic of Kennedys, during the Camelot days of JFK when the secret service was whisking women in and out of the White House (supposedly including M. Monroe), JFK was actively infected with syphilis?
