Apple is Planning 3D Cameras for Next Year's iPhones; Three Rear Cameras Setup For This Year's Phone; and Dark Mode for iOS 13: Report (bloomberg.com) 43

Apple plans to launch iPhones with a more-powerful 3-D camera as soon as next year, stepping up the company's push into augmented reality, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. From the report: The rear-facing, longer-range 3-D camera is designed to scan the environment to create three-dimensional reconstructions of the real world. It will work up to about 15 feet from the device, the people said. Apple's new system uses a laser scanner, rather than the existing dot-projection technology which doesn't work as well over longer distances, according to the people, who asked not to be identified discussing unreleased features. That's just one of many new features -- including a third, more advanced camera, enhanced photo-capture tools and a more powerful chip -- that Apple plans to include in coming generations of iPhones, the people said.

[...] For 2019, Apple plans successors to the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max -- code-named D42 and D43 -- and an update to the iPhone XR, said the people. The larger of the new high-end iPhones will have three cameras on the back, and other handsets could eventually come with the upgraded system, too, the people said. [...] Apple's next operating system update, iOS 13, will include a dark mode option for easier nighttime viewing and improvements to CarPlay, the company's in-vehicle software.

    • Seems this ship has sailed. I prefer the option of a wired headphone or bluetooth which I have until I replace my current phone.

I don’t miss mine. Wanting a headphone jack is like wanting to be 1970 sheik with a boom bar bigger than you are.
      • I've had a few different styles of bluetooth headphones, but I still prefer my wired ones. I don't have to think or worry about charging them, they work seamlessly from my phone to my computer to Nintendo switch and DS and to my cars AUX cable.

        A 1970 sheik, you say? I am familiar with a 1962 sheik [imdb.com] but not 1970.

It seems to me like most attempts at bringing 3D to the general consumer market are meet with a cool reception...

But I have to say, I have one friend on Facebook who somehow has had an experimental feature toggled on for her Facebook app, and she takes what are essentially slightly shifting 3D photos - and they do look amazing (part of which is that she is also a good photographer and knows how to take advantage of the feature).

Live Photos have a bit of a similar effect but the 3D perspective shift on a still subject, adds a bit of extra zing.

One area I can honestly see this really being great though are for things like eBay where you could better convey a sense of the item. eBay would have to support 3D display features like this though.

So, maybe between augmented/virtual reality gear slowly being accepted by the market, and more 3D gear like this going into widespread consumer devices... maybe we'll finally see significant uptake in consumer interest and use of 3D.

A proper 3D camera will be amazing for all the AR apps I never use.

    • Thank you for your valuable contribution. My understanding has been enhanced by someone with measurably zero interest in the topic, a notion that I posted from my HTC Evo 3D.

      • Oh, delicious irony.

I actually have a great deal of interest in the subject. I have multiple VR headsets and have dabbed in AR and VR development. But phone-based AR clearly has no killer app yet. Thatâ(TM)s why I have many AR apps I never use, and why different 3D detection hardware seems of dubious value.

    • A proper 3D camera would be interesting in its own right. But combining a few 2D slices is not 3D.
  • Sounds like a neat idea. You know a portable device that people would have that could take pictures in 3-D and show them back to the user without needing special glasses.

Oh and could you make it a game console as well, with tactile buttons, a replaceable battery, a SD memory slot, and a R-4 card slot?
  • The next iPhone is expected in the autumn of this year, 2019. Next year's iPhone is expected in the autumn of next year, 2020. But it seems like it is talking about this year's iPhone, not next year's iPhone.
  • ... useful shit.

Ever since Jobs died, it's been one expensive coat of paint after another.

    • And each year Apple markets how much better the current years paint is because it's 0.01mm thinner than last years paint.

  • Of all the problems with cell phones that you could have solved, the one you choose was "not enough unsolicited 3D dick pics"

  • Stop listing 'Dark Mode' as a feature.
It is not. It is just something to remind us how little control over our phone we have.
  • It's official, number of cameras on phones is like number of razor blades on a Gillette. Waiting to upgrade my phone to the one with 5 cameras. You take one shot - it takes 5!
  • Hello Apple. This is Windows 3.1 calling from 1994. We want our dark theme back and kindly ask you to stop pretending that you invented something new.
