Submission + - European patent for "Shannon-secure" encryption algorithm without one-time pad
tucuxi writes: Multiple reports in Spain of a new encryption method which, according to its author, provides "double Shannon secure symmetrical encryption" (google translation of one of the news items). The patent application is available online (everything but the abstract is in Spanish). In the application, the inventor claims that Shannon's one-time pad was not really necessary for perfect security, completely disregarding that, were he right, his scheme would allow unlimited, lossless compression. As a Spaniard, I am dumbfounded at so many newspapers taking this snake-oil for granted, and at the European Patent Office for not seeing through the gibberish.
