Apple Begins Making the iPhone 14 In India (cnbc.com) 21
Apple said Monday it is assembling its flagship iPhone 14 in India as the U.S. technology giant looks to shift some production away from China. CNBC reports: "The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We're excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India," the company said in a statement. Apple's main iPhone assembler, Foxconn, is manufacturing the devices at its Sriperumbudur factory on the outskirts of Chennai.
The Cupertino, California, giant has been manufacturing iPhones in India since 2017 but these were usually older models. This time with the iPhone 14, Apple is producing its latest model in India for the first time, close to the device's launch. Apple introduced the iPhone 14 earlier this month. Apple will sell India-produced phones locally but also export them to other markets globally. Customers in India will begin receiving the locally manufactured devices in the next few days. Earlier this month, JPMorgan analysts said that Apple will move 5% of its global production for the iPhone 14 to India by late 2022. The company could also make 25% of all iPhones by 2025 in India.

Oh... India has had nationals working in every major tech company on earth for decades... Even now, they haven't managed to steal the IP they developed themselves. I would not worry about this unless someone in the higher casts actually decides to invest in the people from the lower casts. Until that happens, the Indian engineers capable of IP theft will never see enough money to do it

But would it actually have the desired effect? India had stiff import tariffs on motorcycles for decades, and the net result was that in the absence of meaningful competition, the protected local manufacturers kept building obsolete 1931 Royal Enfield Bullet clones. Or for something perhaps a little closer to home, the US "chicken tax" on imported commercial vehicles has resulted in a kind of bizarre island gigantism in American pickup trucks, and wasteful practices like importing vans with seats and glas

Thailand had stiff import tariffs on motorcycles for decades, and the net result was:
Honda
Yamaha
Suzuki
Kawasaki
BMW
Triumph
Ducati
All have factories in Thailand, and sell to the local market as well as exporting to other countries in SE Asia. Tariffs can make it profitable for international manufacturers to set up shop in your country.

And these aren't the jobs you really want. They're low skill low pay jobs. Last time I checked, pre-pandemic, Americans didn't want those jobs - they were pretty much fulfilled by illegal aliens and Mexican immigrants.
The jobs basically consist of taking a part and screwing it on all day for 8 hours straight. Anyone with respect for themselves generally will quit after the first day
