Apple Starts Manufacturing iPhone 13 In India (reuters.com) 15

Apple has started making the iPhone 13 in India, the company said on Monday. Reuters reports: The phone is being produced at a local plant of Apple's Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn, situated in the town of Sriperumbudur in Southern Tamil Nadu state, according to a source. Apple has been shifting some areas of iPhone production from China to other markets including India, the world's second biggest smartphone market, and is also planning to assemble iPad tablets there. India and countries such as Mexico and Vietnam are becoming increasingly important to contract manufacturers supplying American brands as they try to diversify production away from China. The iPhone 13 is the fourth model to be produced locally after Apple launched manufacturing operations in India in 2017 with the iPhone SE.

So has this been in the works for a long time, or are they stepping up given what they saw with the Ukrainian invasion? If China pulled a Putin and invaded either Taiwan or just some disputed territory, it could get pretty scary given our dependence on them for manufacturing.
    • India has been passing laws over the past few years requiring local production by foreign businesses that wish to sell products in India.

It is both a compliance maneuver and a good business practice to spread out manufacturing among low-cost countries.

It is NOT a fear-of-China action.

  • When will sanctions start for india, as they haven't stopped buying oil from Russia? The last country?

India is allowed to buy oil from Russia for now. Europe needs independence from Russian leverage which is oil n gas. It is unfortunate India is beholden to Russia too so constrained in helping pressure. India will need time to ween itself from Russia if it even cares too. India more concerned about China. Not to give India a pass but should be careful not to push to hard in taking sides. Instead slowly persuade by helping India move in a direction that is in mutual interests. India is not spreading Russian propaganda nor sneakily helping Russia. India is at least a democracy with somewhat open press. Let us help keep democracy and avoid more brutal autocrats like Putin.
