Google's Pixel 6 line may have served as Android 12's big debut for higher-end phones, but Android 12 (Go edition) plans to bring many of the enhancements and features of Android 12 to lower-end phones, too. Google on Tuesday unveiled a host of new features for the Go edition that are set to roll out to devices in 2022. From a report: Google says that in addition to speed enhancements that'll help apps launch up to 30% faster, Android 12 (Go edition) will include a feature that'll save battery life and storage by automatically "hibernating apps that haven't been used for extended periods of time." And with the Files Go app, you'll be able to recover files within 30 days of deletion. Android 12 (Go edition) will also help you easily translate any content, listen to the news and share apps with nearby devices offline to save data, Google says. The company said Android Go has amassed 200 million users.

That would make the phone run 300% faster and drain 70% less battery.

I have been using LineageOS (with microG, not to be mistaken with GApps), so I know that's true. But you cannot always unblock the bootloader to instal LOS, and when possible, it is not something the average Joe wants to do and knows how to do.

Android 12 looks like a shitshow. It's basically taking away the ability for apps to read or write files in the name of "Protecting Privacy". Real believable there Google.

Still can't manually hibernate an app (Score:4, Interesting)
I have some apps that I want to keep installed, updated, and ready to go when I need them (even if I have no network access), but that I would like to disable from running (including in the background) until I need them.
Android 12 still doesn't let me do this.
Why can the OS automatically manage an app when it thinks I'm not using it, but I can't manually do the same when I know for sure I don't want to use it?

Android Go, at least Android 11 Go, is a steaming pile of turd.
Won't keep apps open. Hence no way to track kids' phones. (Life 360 won't stay open either.)
Lots of small but important things missing, like the ability to create Web shortcuts on the home page.
And this only scratches the surface. You can find online reviews that make mine look like high praise.
Unless you're destitute, spend the extra $30 and get a phone with real Android instead.
