iOS 14.5 Will Support PS5 DualSense and Xbox Series X Controllers (theverge.com) 18

Apple's latest iOS 14.5 update for beta testers brings support for the new PS5 DualSense and Xbox Series X controllers. The Verge reports: Apple's upcoming iOS 14.5 update follows the company revealing back in November that it was working with Microsoft to include support for the Xbox Series X controllers. Steam also added PS5 controller support last year, followed by Nvidia's Shield TV support last month. Other features of iOS 14.5 include the ability to unlock an iPhone with an Apple Watch while wearing a mask, Siri emergency contact calling, CarPlay ETA sharing, and dual-SIM 5G support. The official release is expected in the next couple of months.

  • Just to clarify, PS4/XB1 controllers have already been supported for years, what's new here is support for the PS5/XBS variants.

  • While Apple adding support for the PS5 and Xbox Series X Controllers is "a good thing", this is exactly the problem with iOS... These controllers both use standards (Bluetooth, HID, etc.) and already work on Windows, macOS and other platforms without "support being added". (This goes for almost everything except vibration.) So there's no reason for these controllers not to work on iOS (which already has support for HID and Bluetooth under the hood) other than Apple locking them out to begin with. Apple clai

    • Apple is aiming at convergence, so everything it does in this space is with an eye on AppleTV and macOS. Apple Arcade in particular is supposed to be the same on iPhone, iPad, TV, desktop, etc, so they don't launch controller support on one platform until they can do the lot. Game coverage for these controllers (as in button graphics in the UI, y-axis invert, etc) is pretty patchy in the Apple ecosystem so that may hold them back also.
  • My IPAD need multiuser support (via multiple apple id) and this is what the fine people at apple are working on?
  • What I would like to see in iOS is support for USB web cams, to allow better cameras than the internal ones when doing FaceTime and Zoom videocalls. It's esp needed for low light conditions.

I'm looking into creating a dumb-as-nails video conferencing device for a technophobic relative and I've whittled it down to putting an Android or Apple tablet on a floor stand. Android has better camera support but you lose FaceTime, Apple has FaceTime but you only get the not as good front facing cameras with no option

    • MacOS does FaceTime and supports pretty much every camera. A used i5/4GB Macbook is ~$300.
      • That is interesting indeed. I also wonder what used Mac Minis will go for. I expect their price will lower, just because the new ARM-based Mac Minis are so powerful.

  • That they will let me install RetroArch, proper SteamLink and MS xcloud?

  • iOS 14.6 will allow you to unlock an iPhone with an Apple Watch while wearing a mask and standing on your head and juggling.

  • I'm actually kinda looking forward to this. I've been replaying Fallout 4 on my Xbox Series S. This is a mix of adventure and shoot-em-up. I suspect that shooting will not work remotely. But there's a lot of slower-paced stuff in Fallout. Especially if you play it on survival, there's a couple of repetitive things you need to do. It doesn't involve fast-paced combat but rather running and sneaking across the map.

For instance, you've just started the game, and then want to get the Overseer's Guardian (a rifl
