Samsung Regains Top Smartphone Vendor Spot as Xiaomi Overtakes Apple (theverge.com) 49

Samsung is back on top as the world's biggest smartphone vendor one quarter after losing its spot to Huawei, according to reports from IDC, Counterpoint, and Canalys. The news comes just as Samsung posted its highest quarterly revenue figures ever, which the company said was helped by a boost in demand for smartphones. From a report: Huawei became the number one vendor for the first time three months ago, benefiting from strong sales in China while much of the rest of the world was operating under constrained retail conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Huawei's shipments fell 7 percent quarter-on-quarter and 24 percent year-on-year, according to Counterpoint, while Samsung's shipments increased by 47 percent over the last quarter. Xiaomi was able to regain the number three spot for the first time in several years, overtaking Apple for the first time with year-on-year growth of 46 percent. Apple's shipments fell 7 percent year-on-year in the July-September quarter, no doubt affected by the fact that its new iPhones this year slipped until October and November release dates.

  • Samsung is a rral innovator. Taking risks in bringing out new technology. Sometimes too fast and incomplete but I admire their hunger. Apple has become nothing more than a trendy designer thingy that's is only intressted in the stick market. Steve we fucking miss you!

I've been using Samsung phones in my household for a while due to their consistently good reviews. However, a family member insisted on getting a much cheaper LG phone. When I helped set it up, I was astounded by the lack of bloatware. Samsung phones come crammed with it! Stupid tiny apps like "Samsung Notes". (It's just a notes app, but I can't remove it!) Then there's the ridiculous Bixby app. Does anyone use Bixby?

Samsung has some nice hardware, but most of it is wasted with crappy software.

I'm considering leaving Samsung now. Their phones are getting way too expensive, and the bloatware situation is ridiculous!

Last time I bought a new phone 3 years ago (Galaxy S8+), I considered an LG, but there was as lot of noise in the reviews about their boot loop problem. Have they fixed it yet? Haven't heard about it in a while, but I haven't gone looking, either.

      • Last year, I got off of a LG G6 that ran its course and it was fine. Everything worked as expected and I didn't have one issue. I was so pleased with it, that when I was looking for a newer phone, I considered the LG line, but went with a Pixel 4 instead. I really wanted a phone with no notch and the Pixel 4 was one of the few (if any) new phones without that eyesore. I believe even the newer LG models had some sort of punch-out.
      • No idea. The family member insisted on a cheap LG phone, so I bought the highest rated one that met those requirements.
    • The Galaxy s9 was the last Samsung phone I owned after having 4 or 5 in a row. Bixby nightmare and battery on the s9 was the straw that broke the camels back. Switched to Xiaomi around xmas, was expecting a poorer experience but at least the price was much better. To my surprise it is as fast, less bloated and doesn't try to force the Samsung shit down your throat. will never go back to Samsung at this point.

So, jailbreak them and start clean.

Some people manage by the book, even though they don't know who wrote the book or even what book.
