Red Founder Kills the Company's Holographic Phone Project, Announces Retirement (gizmodo.com) 10
The Red Hydrogen One was a phone from another dimension. It was big, super heavy, and was billed the world's first holographic phone. Except it never quite delivered, and now, alongside a retirement announcement, Red Founder Jim Jannard is canceling Red's Hydrogen project altogether. From a report: In a post on Red's Hydrogen forums, Jannard explained that after turning 70 and being hit with "a few health issues," he felt it was time for him to retire. In a rather brief statement, Jannard thanked previous coworkers and employees, while announcing that Red's Digital Cinema team will left in the hands of Red president Jarred Land, Red executive vice president Tommy Rios, and Red president of marketing and creative Jamin Jannard. As for the Hydrogen One itself, Jannard says the phone will continue to receive support, though it's unclear if that means the phone will just get regular security patches or more substantial updates like new versions of Android. As for Red's second Hydrogen phone, which was teased in a forum post Jannard made earlier this summer, the development of that device has almost certainly been canceled.

I thought your story was gonna be a lead in to when you first heard of some business by this 70 year old, then in his 30s.

I thought it sounded like an interesting enough device, I almost pre-ordered one out of support...
But in the end I decided it really would be more prudent to wait and see what was delivered - in the end I'm glad I did, in part because I had planned to try photographing with it on a trip that the actual release ended up being way after.
Between that and the fold it really made me gun-shy about beta hardware releases of any large monetary value.

Unless you can project a solid image most holographic images that we see in movies and such would actually suck in real life.
Take your terminal window in Linux, set the background transparency to fully transparent, with semi transparent text. Try working with that on a screen with other windows open.... That would be your workday with holograms.
Movies like this effect mostly because that way we can have the Stars face fully exposed for full acting, and some presentation of the data. But it is mostly so we can see the actor. The same thing, on why other shows, has people "Whiteboarding" on a pain of glass.
Seems cool, but would have a quick novelty factor then will wear off quickly, to methods that are far more practical.
Back in 2011/2012 they had 3d display phones and game systems. That lasted a short while where people just wanted higher resolution clearer screen displays.
