Google is adding personalized TV and movie recommendations to search, in hopes of solving the age old question: what do you actually want to watch? From a report: Now, when you search Google for things like "good shows to watch" or "what to watch," there'll be a new carousel-style menu with TV shows and movies that you can swipe left and right on, similar to a dating app. Google says that it'll be able to curate those suggestions based on what you search: ask for "horror movies from the '80s," for example, and you'll get recommendations specifically for that.

No problem. Google knows you feel they know too much and they'll adapt their algorithm for less conspicuous suggestions. So they will suggest nature documentaries about hairy beavers instead.

Do people actually search this? I mean I imagine a small number of people probably do. But it seems weird that someone would just: "Hm.... there's nothing to watch..... www.google.com...... what should I watch?" I'd think the same people likely to do this would already be on facebook and swarmed with posts of "omg ____ best show ever watch it right now!"

So far Google has taken the "you have no choice" approach as set by Eric Schmidt back in 2004 with his speech: "You don't need to type anything ... (more stuff I don't remember). We pretty much know what you are thiinking about". The idea is to make the user feed powerless and just give in to their surveillance.
For example, when they give your access to see what data they collect on you, there is a button saying "Pause" collection of private data. Not "Stop", but "Pause". The choice is very much intentional

My TV does not run android, so no way to know what I really watch. There are 4 people in my household, so even if Google could somehow see what's on the tube, there's no way to know who selected it or who's watching.

"What to watch?" Is this really an "age old question?" Age old questions provoke reasoning like "Know thyself." I can just imagine Socrates pivoting from "Know thyself" into, "Damn it man! Shows are out of season so WTF do I watch now?!?" Leave it to the Verge.
Now if only they can find a way to work Apple into this conversation, it will be perfect.
