Apple Will Launch iPhone 11 on Sept. 10 in Cupertino (cnet.com) 72

Get ready for the iPhone 11 on September 10. Apple today sent invites to reporters for its next big product launch. It plans to introduce its newest devices and services at 10am, at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino. From a report: The iPhone may be a tougher sell this year. Apple isn't expected to change the basic design of the device, making it the first time the iPhone's had the same look for three years in a row. At the same time, rivals are introducing phones with flexible screens and with 5G -- two innovations not found in Apple devices. Many people are looking toward 2020 for big iPhone changes. This year, Apple is expected to introduce three new models, replacing the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR with the rumored iPhone 11, 11 Max/11 Pro and 11R. The devices likely will include better cameras, faster processors and iOS 13. They come at a time of malaise in the smartphone market, with people holding onto their devices longer than before.

Same look is good ... .. We don't need a rushed systemd-like iPhone just for the sake of change.
In fact, they could even bring the physical home button back - iPhone buyers won't complain.

    • The back button was the major source of failure on my previous iPhones. I actually like the current design much better. because it is one less part to ware out. And it will take a long time for me to use up the volume and lock buttons.

Snort. Yeah sure, a “back” button on your “iPhones”...

If you had ever actually owned an iPhone you’d know that iPhones don’t have a “back” button so it can’t ware [sic] out. It’s Android phones that have a back button and really old ones used physical buttons that could wear out. Soooo you’re an Android fanboy posting nonsense. Thanks for making that crystal clear.

I would complain,That thing was always a point of failure.
We have 100's deployed, and almost every return was due to that button failing.

    • In fact, they could even bring the physical home button back - iPhone buyers won't complain.

      ...and the Jack!

      • A lot of people at Apple must be fans of Ray Charles, so... nope, Jack is not coming back.

You can still get an iPhone 6S or iPhone SE in some places, and the iPod touch still has a headphone jack too - and even a faster CPU/GPU than the 6S/SE.

    • What is the compelling reason to upgrad without a slicker form factor? It seems pretty generous to assume they just take a few years more than others to work out the kinks rather than that they're motivated by maximizing profit from a base they assume will accept whatever they do. I own an iphone but it's an iphone 7... I might upgrade next year when if they release a fullscreen version in that size but I don't see any reason to do so unless they do. It just seems more and more that they're taking their

I think at this point nobody is upgrading their phone, they just use it until the battery dies or otherwise becomes unusable. The fraction of the populaton upgrading their phone for new features these days is very small. Apple needs an annual update so that people feel like they're getting a new phone when theirs breaks, not because they have shiny new features.

I don't care about the notch or the headphone jack or whether the home button fakes it, just let me ignore the scammers. All I want is iOS 13 to have the ability to set a ringtone for everyone who is not in my contacts, and for one of the options to be silence. Android has had that since woolly mammoths roamed the earth.

      • That's really not too hard to do, or at least get close to, with a little customization. I gave nearly everyone in my contacts their own ringtone, and use a separate one also for the default "generic" ringtone, which 99.999% of the time is spammers. I then created a contact for "Spamfuqers", created a "silent" ring tone of 5 seconds of nothing in Audition, and imported it via iTunes (yeah, that was a PITA) for it, and then assign spammers to that contact. So once a spammer has called and I identify them

    • > they could even bring the physical home button back - iPhone buyers won't complain.

They could do anything they want and iPhone buyers won't complain.
    • Oh, you speak for all iPhone owners?
    • iPhone buyers won't complain

Of course they won't. They won't buy either. Shareholders will be the ones complaining.
*YOU* may like the idea of stability and the comfort of something which doesn't change. Unfortunately that does not sit well with consumers. A lot of people forget that change for change's sake isn't actually something that companies do, they do change for profit's sake.

    • In fact, they could even bring the physical home button back - iPhone buyers won't complain.

They could require that phone be coated with quick-dry epoxy and shoved up their asses sideways and iPhone buyers won't complain.

  • it will bring down the house.

  • Will the new iPhone 11 be announce or launch? I'm thinking announce since my carrier isn't offering any sweet heart deals for last year's models.

Some people will continue holding onto the existing devices, until something with an earphone jack comes along. Up to Apple when that happens.

  • This phone will come with a knob that goes all the way to 11!

...Apple screwed themselves by giving the low-cost battery replacements after their throttling debacle (which I actually thought was a good move on their part as I'd rather have a slower phone that lasted longer than a faster one with only a few hours of battery life). Their $30 replacement has added two years and counting to the life of my iPhone 6. If not for that, it would have been replaced long before now.

    • I think the opposite, iphone 6 gets dropped this year, so resale will drop on it. It *IS* a lot easier to sell a used phone if it's got a brand new battery . . . I think people now know their purchasing style and plan for that now. Some examples are: - Before the resale price drops on the old phone - Some interval they choose on their own (2 or 3 years maybe) - When the latest OS isn't supported. - When finally gets added - A family member breaks their phone and since you're paying the bill, they get yo
  • That would be a key selling point, in these seemingly 'end of days' times.

How about going better than 85% recyclable - (which is theoretical anyway, 85% is the best case scenario) ?

How about being totally upfront about all the energy costs involved, the labour practices involved - get 100% truthful and market that as the key selling point?

We reached feature overload with mobiles years back, which is why we aren't replacing them as often.
Sensible people will only replace a phone when it breaks and can't be f

    • Apple have always had children and rioting workers in toxic conditions... Is why they are so heavily reliant on China. Nobody cares once Apple does lip service to changes.

I would argue a cheaper phone under a different brand so not too stop it being a veblin good.

  • Is pandering to Apples propaganda even worth it anymore.

It's market share continues to drop, to Android in Europe. Japan is going to kill its subsidy on new phones. It's last stronghold is America as a veblin good and Trump has decided cook isn't being a good freind... And that is this week.

Apple are going to launch a phone to continue to milk those who are poor or find change hard.

The excitement...if any is in the mid priced premium androids.

  • What’s this malaise bullshit supposed to be? People becoming comfortable with keeping their phones longer because the market is maturing is somehow a bad thing? Give Apple credit for seeing lower sales coming and seeing that selling services around the iOS platform is how they can keep people happy and still make money even if they aren’t replacing their iPhones as often.

    • Apple have been great at locking it's users in through falsehoods, and it is milking them with its high prices and monopolistic practices.

But a quick look at services show that it is not making up its shortfall in iPhone sales with its services which is a fraction. It does make Apple less dependant on the iPhone sales keeping investors happy.

The real worry is customers moving to other manufacturers. Which is reported happening. The shadow of investigation into its monopolistic practices are also a justified

  • Yawn....another overpriced phone with incrementally 'improved' features that most people never use.

But hey, if you wanna spend $1000 on your new shiny doodad, be my guest.
