They didn't as much drop the escape key as making the entire top row software buttons. So it's still there, unless you or the app you're using changes it - and I think you can prevent it from being overridden. That said, the touch bar can't have been a huge success or it would have made it into more models and their wireless keyboards to ensure that software actually uses the capabilities in it.

I've never seen a USB 104 key keyboard without an escape key.
So no, I don't think you're correct.
Maybe you're thinking of the single button ADB mice from the 80s before anyone else used mice on computers? Because they only had one button.
