Motorola Teases the New Razr Phone In November Event Invitation (cnet.com) 22

Motorola has sent out invitations to an event on Nov. 13, where the rumored foldable Razr phone could launch. CNET reports: Motorola said the evening event in downtown Los Angeles will feature the "highly anticipated unveiling of a reinvented icon." The save the date is a gif showing a device being folded and unfolded. "An original unlike any other," it reads, also displaying the numeric 11/13/19 date. According to the invitation, the event will feature special guests and musical performers, as well as "a journey through immersive experiences." "You're going to flip," Motorola's invite says. Motorola's Razr phone is rumored to have a foldable screen, but instead of opening out into a tablet, the phone could fold vertically to fit inside pockets. "It's also been reported that the phone will cost $1,500; measure 6.2 inches; run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor; come in white, black and gold; and have a 2,730mAh battery, 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GM or 128GB of storage," reports CNET.

  • There's too little to tell from the teaser, but it's probably not much like the olde RAZR - and that would be a great thing.

    The old metal RAZR looked really cool, and functionally it worked well. But the buttons were terrible, especially the side buttons which I could not help but trigger often.

    I look forward to seeing what a redesigned smart-flipphone would be like, with a lot of design put into it... something like the Galaxy Fold, but more robust and that flipped up into a normal smaller phone sized vie

      My guess is a clone of the current foldable prototype. Jerry rig everything had a breakdown and it certainly wasn’t an edc. Foldable won’t meet up to every day requirements. Early adopters are expected to pay for the road!

        US$1,500, an amount almost equal to a [monthly] mortgage, is just out of my league for a phone.

          "Avacado" is a different shade of green. Stop trying to impose rules on art. ;-)

    • The UI experience had nothing to do with what made the old razor great. It was size. And then when smartphones appeared we learned the folding and protecting the screen was a second way that it was great. Imagine not have to dedicate a pocket to the phone to protect the screen.

      If it keeps these 2 things, small size and folding to protect screen, it too can be great. Yeah a smartphone experience and 3rd party apps would be nice but don't sacrifice size to be yet another phablet. Screw the folding screen n

      • The old RAZR ran BREW on a dinky ultra low power single core chip (embedded PowerPC? that's my understanding anyway.) It could be small. Modern octocore phones with fat GPUs need a whole bunch of battery. They physically can't be small.

          Octocore CPUs with high performance GPUs are *not* mandatory. More modest components can be selected for a small smartphone. It does not have to be a gaming device. Again, the key to being a rarz is size, it doesn't have to be yet another moving watching game playing phablet. We have plenty of those, don't need another, we could use something smaller and more durable though.

      So you're saying we finally have a high end phone with a high end screen? Plastic can do something no glass screen can do: Matte finish. If they do that, it will truly be a high end device, a Matte screen would be better than any other phone on the market today.

  • Android 10 is starting to roll out to non-Pixel devices now, but not to my Moto X4 Android One. I tweeted about it and Moto replied:

      Back when it came out, those BREW phones were not particularly bad... compared to the competition, that is. And the RAZR had almost the same signal strength and battery life as its relatives the triplets (V300, V500, V600) but also became much larger and flatter than they did when opened. I thought that they were pretty good phones at the time. They were surprisingly durable, too. On the down side, Motorola would withhold all kinds of functionality as a selling point for different models, so you had to reso

  • Instead of another +1000$ glass phone I'd like to see an old-school dual-screen foldable, like Sony-Ericsson z530i that I can conveniently put in the smallest of my pockets. Something that replaces not so much a smart phone but a regular phone and a watch, has a battery that lasts for days and does not need a screen protector. I receive calls just by opening the phone - so elegant and intuitive. Keep the same form factor, make the screen bezel smaller, add a decent camera and I'm in.

      It's not sexy, but it is durable, fairly compact, works well as a regular phone and a watch, battery lasts for days, doesn't need a screen protector, answers calls just by opening the phone, and it has a reasonable (though not stellar) camera too.

      Of course if you're used to carrying an actual smartphone around you'll find any of these very disappointing.
