LG's Leather-Clad G4 Revealed In Leaked Images 39

An anonymous reader writes Evan Blass, known on Twitter as @evleaks, released images of LG's G4 smartphone which was supposed to be unveiled April 28th. "The images reveal what appear to be a multitude of swappable back plates. There are at least six different real leather backs (ranging from black and brown to baby blue and yellow), as well as three more traditional plastic backs. It's fair to assume that the leather versions will carry a cost premium. The LG Quick Circle case, which has a window to let you view notifications while the cover is closed, also appears to be making a return with the G4."

...and are willing to accept a thicker phone to get them?

This phone is basically a third of an inch thick. Given that one holds the phone while it's in use by that thin edge, this is getting a little ridiculous. Give me a thicker phone with a much bigger battery. My pockets can handle it, I assure you, and with more edge to hold on to I'm much les likely to drop the damn thing by accident, and they could even build the phone more durably to the point I might not need to buy a third-party case either.

      Me. Right here.

I'd like to get an iPhone, but only 250 standby hours is lame.
Considering that everyone buys a case for their phone anyway, in some cases a battery case, they might as well just make it thicker to start with and give it a larger battery.

The only Android handset I've really been interested in is the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, the battery life being a major reason.

      • The Xperia Z3 is also worth a look. Same standby time as the Z3 Compact (920 hours claimed), and even longer talk times (16 hours). Full disclosure: I have no connection to Sony Mobile, but I do own the previous Xperia Z2 and couldn't be much happier with it.

I don't want a huge phone. The current iPhone is too large even, I would stay with the 5S's size.
The Z3 Compact's 4.6" screen is at least only as big as a normal iPhone 6.

You won't need a case for that one, that phone is basically indestructible. But that phone is actually too thin and too rectangular. It looks cool, but it definitely doesn't feel good when you're holding it.

It's basically the complete opposite of LG phones. While LG phones seem to focus on how good they feel in your hands, which is actually pretty awesome, they're super fragile and they definitely need a case for sure (which completely defeats the sensory experience they were going for).

This was going to be my question. I'm happy with a 10mm or even 15mm phone if I can get a few days battery time out of it instead of today's 3-4 hours screen time (or less when gaming or using GPS). I don't even get a boring office day out of it. (On a non-boring day I'm not using the phone that much.)

I'm in a building that has poor cell phone reception, so I definitely hear you on battery life. With no usage my battery is less than 20% after a full shift if I don't have a need to go out, and sometimes I'm down to less than 5% if I've had anyone call my cell instead of my desk.
    • Iphone user here, but I would definitely like to make the same trade-off: a few mm extra thickness in exchange for longer battery life.

I have a G3 and the thin, slick edge is actually more of a problem for me than battery life. A thicker, textured edge and better battery life would be great improvements and would cost very little.

    • ...and are willing to accept a thicker phone to get them?

The real question is: are you willing to carry a phone notably heavier?

      • by TWX ( 665546 )
Yes. Before work was willing to issue a cell phone stipend so that we could use our personal phones for work purposes I had to carry a work phone in addition to my phone. I do not mind having to carry a heavier phone.
    • Agreed, wish the millimetre wars could finally be over and the battery wars would begin. I long for the days where my phone didn't necessarily need to be charged every night. Where I could USE my phone without the fear of it's imminent demise. Add to that the bonus that this whole "bending" problem would be significantly reduced.

I don't understand the fascination that tech news sites have with pictures of upcoming smartphones. Pretty much every standard smartphone looks exactly like every other damn smartphone on the planet -- a touchscreen with a bezel around it. The "interesting" part of this announcements is the color of the back of the phone -- which is the part that you're never looking at anyway.

This is almost as exciting as reading about who wore what at the Academy Awards!

    • Just think next year we can read about who had the leather cover on their phone actually match what they wore at the Academy Awards!

  • ranging from black and brown to baby blue

If your baby's blue, you should probably get it to a doctor. It's a-sposed-ta be pink.

  • which has a window to let you view notifications while the cover is closed

I don't get the whole idea behind a separate window to view notifications through. I like to see an entire screen.

    • I'm not sure if you a trolling or not.... The LG circle case is a folio style case so it has a door that closes over the screen. The case then has a small circle cut in it and the phone tailors your message notifications to fit inside the small circle. This way if you phone bleeps you can see what the message was without opening the phone case. You can also see who is calling you and answer / decline calls via the small window.

At least one manufacturer is still making phones with replaceable batteries and a Micro SD slot. I wish they would make a water-resistant version.
  • LG is so behind the times.

  • Or is it leather glued to a plastic shell?
  • I really like my Nexus 5. If this one gets the Google Nexus treatment I may upgrade. I'm never buying a phone with vendor crap on it again.
  • No seriously, who cares? First thing I did when I bought my G3 was buy a nice case with a stand, so I could watch videos, as well as protect the wafer thin phone from drops or hitting it. How about making sure the female connection for recharging doesn't come lose after 40 recharges, or giving me a wireless option?
    • by SeaFox ( 739806 )

If you're buying a case for it, why not get a wireless charging case and hit two birds with one stone?
